Easy Panoramic Walks Around Sils Maria for a Relaxed Summer Holiday

Aerial view of Sils Maria village and Lake Sils in the Engadine

Some holidays are about summit pushes and aching legs. This is not one of them. Sils Maria sits at the quiet end of the Upper Engadine, ringed by lakes and larch forest, and it rewards walkers who would rather drift than climb. The easy walks around Sils Maria deliver the kind of wide alpine scenery most people associate with hard effort, except here the valley floor does the work for you. This guide gathers the gentlest, most rewarding options, from a flat lakeside stroll to a car-free side valley and one lift-assisted high viewpoint, all within easy reach of the village.

Why Sils Maria is made for easy walking

The Engadine valley floor sits around 1,800 metres, which means you start most walks already high in the mountains. The big panoramas are level with you, not far above you. Lej da Segl, or Lake Sils, is the largest lake in Graubünden and the centrepiece of the Upper Engadine lake district, and its shoreline paths are broad and nearly flat. Add the larch forests, the clear light that drew artists and writers here for over a century, and a couple of corners closed to cars, and you have a rare thing: genuine mountain scenery on gentle terrain. You do not need to be a hiker to enjoy any of the walks below.

The flat lakeside walk along Lej da Segl

If you only do one walk, make it the lakeside path along Lej da Segl. The shore route runs almost level from the edge of the village, threading between the water and the larches with the peaks of the Maloja end framing every view. You can walk as far as you like and simply turn back, which makes it ideal for an unhurried morning or a post-lunch amble.

Pair it with the Segl-Maria boat

There is a neat trick that turns a flat walk into a small adventure. The Segl-Maria, a scheduled passenger boat and reputedly the highest in Europe, crosses from Sils Maria toward Maloja in about 40 minutes, four times a day from late June to late September. It stops at the Chastè peninsula, Plaun da Lej and Isola. Walk the shoreline one way and let the boat carry you back, or the reverse. You get the lake from two angles and never repeat your steps.

Chastè peninsula and the Nietzsche stone

The Chastè peninsula is a wooded finger of land reaching out into Lake Sils, and the short loop around it is one of the most charming easy walks in the whole valley. Plan on roughly an hour to an hour and a quarter at a relaxed pace over gentle ground. At the southern tip stands the Nietzsche memorial stone, marking the spot the philosopher considered the most beautiful in the Engadine. He spent his summers in Sils Maria from 1881 to 1888, and the flowery meadows and lake views make it easy to see why. It is a walk that gives you scenery and a story in equal measure.

Into car-free Val Fex

The Fex Valley is the one to save time for. Since 1954 a building, road and ski-lift ban has kept Val Fex almost untouched, which means no traffic, no clutter, just a broad green valley climbing slowly between three-thousand-metre peaks. The valley floor is gentle and well surfaced, so you can walk as much or as little as you like and still feel deep in the mountains. Traditional Engadine hamlets, meadows and clear streams line the way.

If walking the whole valley feels like too much, you do not have to. A horse-drawn omnibus runs on a summer timetable up to Platta, Crasta and Hotel Fex, so you can ride up and stroll back downhill, or simply enjoy the carriage and the views. It is one of the most relaxing ways to see an alpine valley anywhere in Switzerland.

One easy high viewpoint: Furtschellas by cable car

For a higher panorama without the climb, take the Furtschellas cable car. It lifts you straight out of the valley above Sils, and the routes from the top are built for easy walking rather than hard hiking. The gentle path to the Marmoré viewpoint opens up a sweeping view back over the lakes, and the relaxed Via Gastronomica descends toward Val Fex past mountain restaurants, so you can pause for coffee or lunch with the whole Engadine spread below you. The cable car runs through the summer season, opening on 27-06-2026. This is the optional upgrade for a day when you want the big high-altitude view but still nothing strenuous underfoot.

Planning your walks from the Schweizerhof

The beauty of basing yourself in the village is that every walk here starts more or less from the door. The lakeside path, the Chastè loop and the road into Val Fex are all within an easy stroll of the centre, so you rarely need a car. Summer in the Engadine is bright but the air stays cool at altitude, so pack a light layer, sun protection and comfortable shoes, and carry water. The walking season runs roughly from late spring to early autumn, when the trails are clear and the meadows are in flower.

The Schweizerhof, Sils Maria, a Faern collection resort, sits in the heart of the village, which makes it a natural base for all of these walks.
