Crans-Montana Lantern Path (Chemin des Lanternes)

Chemin des Lanternes
During the winter months Crans‑Montana offers a unique illuminated walking trail known as the Lantern Path. From early December through early March, hundreds of lanterns are hung along a forested path near the Hameau de Mayens. As night falls, the lanterns cast a warm glow across the snow‑covered trees, creating a fairy‑tale ambiance. Along the route visitors encounter artistic light installations and glowing sculptures that add an extra layer of magic. The Lantern Path is more than a simple walk; it’s an evolving cultural programme. On selected evenings, the trail becomes a stage for concerts featuring world music, jazz and French chanson. Local chefs set up food stands serving raclette, charcuterie and local wines. Other nights, circus and fire‑show performers captivate audiences with acrobatics and pyrotechnics. Because the path is outdoors, it’s weather‑dependent, but organisers maintain the trail well and provide updates on conditions. Walking the Lantern Path is one of the most enchanting ways to experience Crans‑Montana’s winter spirit, blending nature, art and culture.
Who is it for?
The Lantern Path appeals to a broad audience. Couples will enjoy the romantic glow and the quiet serenity of walking through an illuminated forest. Families with children will find the light sculptures and performances delightful, especially when combined with a cup of hot chocolate. Photographers and social‑media enthusiasts can capture striking images of lanterns reflecting off the snow. Visitors who enjoy live music or theatre will appreciate the concerts and shows; these evenings are best suited to adults and older children who can remain outdoors for an extended period. Guests seeking calm and reflection may prefer visiting on non‑performance nights, when the path is quieter and the focus is on the peaceful atmosphere.
How to get there from the hotel
The starting point of the Lantern Path is near Hameau de Mayens, a short distance from the village centre. From Faern Resorts, head south toward the edge of the village and follow signs for “Chemin des Lanternes” or “Hameau de Mayens.” The walk takes approximately 10–15 minutes and is mostly flat, but be prepared for snow underfoot. Alternatively, you can take the free Shuttle Bus toward the Mayens area; ask the driver to drop you at the Lantern Path stop. Wear warm clothes, gloves and appropriate footwear, and consider bringing a headlamp if you plan to stay after the lanterns are switched off. On performance evenings, arrive a little early to secure a good spot for concerts or shows.
