A Couple's Guide to the Jungfrau Region from Wengen

The Jungfrau Region is one of the most photographed landscapes in the Swiss Alps, and for good reason. But while most visitors come for the headline attractions, couples who base themselves in Wengen unlock something quieter: a car-free village perched above the Lauterbrunnen Valley, with direct rail and cable car connections to the wider region and a pace that rewards lingering over a view rather than rushing to the next stop. Here is a practical guide to spending a summer trip here as a pair, from mountain walks and revolving restaurants to spa sessions and lakeside excursions.

Why Wengen Works for Couples
Wengen has been car-free since the village was founded as a resort in the late 19th century. The only way in is by the Wengernalp Railway from Lauterbrunnen, a ten-minute ride that sets the tone for the rest of your stay. Without traffic noise, evenings in the village are remarkably still, and summer sunsets over the valley tend to go on for a long time.
Victoria Lauberhorn sits one minute from the train station and the Mannlichen cable car. That location matters: it means you can step straight from the hotel into a full day of exploring and be back in time for a cocktail on the terrace before dinner.

Scenic Rides and Mountain Walks for Two
The Royal Ride to Mannlichen
The Wengen to Mannlichen cable car lifts you 1,200 metres in about ten minutes. For a few francs extra, upgrade to the Royal Ride, an open-air balcony cabin that puts nothing between you and the valley below. At the top station (2,343 m), the Royal Walk is a gentle 30-minute loop to a crown-shaped viewing platform with a panorama stretching from the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau to Lake Thun in the distance.
A return ticket from Wengen costs CHF 62 for adults (CHF 31 with a Swiss Half Fare Card). The Royal Ride upgrade is CHF 10 return. The cable car runs from 23 May to 25 October in summer 2026, with first departures around 08:30.
The Panorama Trail and the Romantic Trail
From Mannlichen, two walks stand out. The Panorama Trail covers 4.5 km to Kleine Scheidegg in about 80 minutes, with the north faces of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau directly ahead for most of the route. It is mostly flat and suitable for any fitness level.
For something less travelled, the Romantic Trail runs 7.2 km from Mannlichen to Alpiglen through wildflower meadows, alpine farms and the narrow Devil's Gorge. In June and July, the pastures are filled with gentians, alpine roses and cotton grass. Allow two to three hours. At Alpiglen, catch the Wengernalp Railway back to Wengen (roughly every 30 minutes).

Dining with a View
Piz Gloria at the Schilthorn
A half-day trip from Wengen takes you to one of the most dramatic restaurants in the Alps. Piz Gloria sits at 2,970 metres on the Schilthorn summit, and its circular dining room completes a full rotation every 45 minutes. The menu runs from regional dishes to simple snacks, all served with a slowly turning panorama of the surrounding peaks. Book a table in advance through the Schilthorn website.
To get there from Wengen, take the train down to Lauterbrunnen, then the cable car up via Grutschalp to Murren, and finally the Schilthornbahn to the summit. A return ticket from Stechelberg costs CHF 115 (CHF 57.50 with a Half Fare Card). Allow half a day for the round trip.
Back in Wengen
At Victoria Lauberhorn, Pasta & More is a popular Wengen institution built around its pasta menu. Fresh tagliatelle, ravioli and classic Italian preparations sit alongside grilled dishes and regional fare. On warm afternoons, the outdoor terrace is the place to be: order a coffee and something from the home-made pastry selection, and settle into the views over the valley. The restaurant is open from 11:00 to 22:30.

Spa and Wellness After a Day in the Mountains
One of the advantages of basing a trip at Victoria Lauberhorn is the wellness area, which is currently undergoing improvements for summer guests. The spa includes an indoor pool, sauna, steam room, a panoramic relaxation room with mountain views and an outdoor whirlpool available on request. Massages can be booked directly through the hotel. The spa is open from 09:00 to 20:00.
For a change of scene, the Grand Hotel Belvedere in Wengen offers day spa access for CHF 80 (complimentary when you book a treatment of 60 minutes or more). Its spa draws on Japanese-inspired design, with mineral-rich waters and a programme of summer yoga retreats. On a warm afternoon, the Wengen outdoor swimming pool is a refreshing option with panoramic mountain views right in the heart of the village.

Half-Day Excursions from Wengen
The Lauterbrunnen Valley is just ten minutes below Wengen by train and holds two of Switzerland's most impressive waterfalls. Staubbach Fall drops 297 metres from a cliff above the village, and in summer a path leads behind the curtain of water to a rock gallery. A short bus ride further into the valley, Trummelbach Falls channels glacial meltwater from the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau through ten underground waterfalls, carrying up to 20,000 litres per second. A tunnel lift takes you into the mountain to see them up close.
If you have time for a longer excursion, a lake cruise on Lake Brienz or Lake Thun departs from Interlaken (about 40 minutes by train from Wengen). The full crossing of Lake Brienz takes 75 minutes and runs from late May to mid-October. The Swiss Travel Pass covers the fare.

Planning Tips for Couples
The best window for this trip is late June through September, when the cable cars, mountain restaurants and hiking trails are all fully open. July and August bring the warmest weather and longest daylight, but also the most visitors. September offers quieter trails, stable conditions and the first hints of autumn colour.
Download the SBB Mobile app before you arrive. It covers train, bus and cable car routes, timetables and tickets across the region. A Swiss Half Fare Card (CHF 120 for one month) cuts most fares in half and pays for itself quickly in the Bernese Oberland.
Pack layers. Valley temperatures in summer sit around 20 to 25 degrees Celsius, but it can drop below 10 degrees at the Schilthorn or Mannlichen summit. Sturdy walking shoes are essential, even for the easier trails.
Your Base in the Jungfrau Region
Whether the day's plan is a sunrise cable car ride, a long lunch at a revolving restaurant or an afternoon by the pool, Wengen keeps things simple. The village is small enough to walk end to end in fifteen minutes, and Victoria Lauberhorn puts the best of the Jungfrau Region within easy reach. It is a place built for slowing down together.
