Cable car to Männlichen and the Royal Walk

Männlichen is a broad, grassy ridge rising above Wengen at 2 345 m.  For decades it has served as both a winter ski area and a summer hiking hub, connected to the village by an aerial cableway.  Today’s cabins have open‑air balconies, turning the ten‑minute ride into an adventure in its own right. Stepping out at the upper station, you find yourself on a high‑alpine plateau with 360‑degree views of the Bernese Alps. Here begins the Royal Walk, a short educational trail that climbs about 120 m over two kilometres round trip to a crown‑shaped viewing platform.  Seven interpretive pillars explain how glaciers carved the surrounding peaks, and the summit rewards walkers with sweeping vistas of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.

What makes it special

• Open‑air ride: The Wengen–Männlichen cable car has balconies on the roof known as the Royal Ride. Standing outside during the ten‑minute journey delivers an unforgettable aerial view of the Lauterbrunnen valley. On calm days you feel the breeze and smell the mountain air as the cabin glides above forests and meadows.
• Short summit stroll: The Royal Walk requires around fifteen minutes of walking to reach the crown platform.  Seven illustrated posts along the way explain local geology, wildlife and history, making it a family‑friendly introduction to the Alps. Children enjoy counting the animal footprints carved into the path and spotting wildflowers along the trail.
• Playgrounds and themed trails: Männlichen is also home to the Liselotte cow‑themed adventure trail for children.  This interactive path features wooden milking cows, balance beams and slides, turning the mountain into a natural playground.  Nearby picnic areas invite you to spread out a blanket while taking in spectacular vistas.

From the moment you step into the cabin you are treated to a moving panorama: the valley floor dropping away beneath your feet, the jagged outlines of the Alps on the horizon and the occasional paraglider floating past. The journey is short enough to slot into a busy day yet spectacular enough to justify a dedicated excursion. At the top you can drink coffee on the terrace of the Panorama restaurant, listen to cowbells ringing across the pastures or simply sit on a bench and watch clouds swirl around the Eiger.  Because the Royal Walk is short and gently graded, it appeals to families and less experienced hikers as much as to seasoned mountaineers.

Planning your visit

Plan to spend at least two to three hours on this outing.  Check the operating hours of the cable car, which usually runs from late May until early November, with the first departure around 08.30 and the last return in late afternoon. An early morning start avoids queues and ensures crisp views before midday haze builds.  Dress in layers – even in summer, temperatures at 2 345 m can be significantly cooler than in Wengen.  Wear comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots and bring a hat, sunscreen and sunglasses. The air is thinner at altitude, so walk at a relaxed pace and drink plenty of water. On windy days the open‑air balcony may be closed for safety, but the ride is still scenic from inside the cabin.

Getting there from Hotel Victoria Lauberhorn

Staying at Hotel Victoria Lauberhorn makes this excursion effortless.  From the lobby it is a five‑minute stroll down Wengen’s main street to the cable car valley station.  Purchase your ticket at the kiosk or from the automated machine, then board the next cabin.  The ride takes about ten minutes. At the summit, follow the signposted Royal Walk. The climb to the crown‑shaped platform takes fifteen minutes each way. Allow time to explore the interpretive stations, visit the restaurant and perhaps let children play on the Liselotte trail before returning. The entire outing, including walking to and from the hotel, cable car ride and time spent at the top, typically fills half a day, leaving you plenty of time for an afternoon spa session or another excursion.
