The Romantic Trail - Männlichen to Alpiglen

At a glance (part of the top 10 things to do in Wengen)
The Romantic Trail traverses flower‑strewn alpine pastures between Männlichen and Alpiglen. Set away from the bustle of the Panorama Trail, it winds across meadows filled with gentians, alpine roses and other wildflowers before descending through the narrow Teufenschlucht, or Devil’s Gorge. Traditional alpine farms such as Alp Gummi, Bustiglen and Arvengarten dot the route, their weather‑beaten chalets hinting at centuries of seasonal transhumance. According to Interlaken Tourism, walkers can also start the hike at Alpiglen and head uphill toward Männlichen; whichever direction you choose, you’ll encounter a quieter, more intimate side of the mountain.
What makes it special
- Wildflower meadows: In June and July the pastures are carpeted with anemones, gentians, alpine roses and cotton grass. Bees buzz among the blooms and butterflies flit from flower to flower. The diversity of colours and fragrances makes this trail a botanical delight.
- Varied landscape: The route alternates between sunny meadows, shady spruce forests and the dramatic Devil’s Gorge. In the gorge the path crosses wooden bridges over rushing streams and passes moss‑covered rock walls. Traditional mountain huts dot the trail, offering glimpses of rural life and the opportunity to buy alpine cheese directly from farmers.
- Flexible route: Hikers can walk all the way down to Alpiglen or turn around at any point. At Alpiglen a small station on the Wengernalp Railway allows you to catch the train back to Wengen. If you begin at Alpiglen, you’ll enjoy a steady climb through varied terrain, finishing at Männlichen where a restaurant awaits.
- Solitude: Compared with the more popular Panorama Trail, the Romantic Trail sees fewer walkers, allowing you to savour the sounds of birdsong and the murmur of streams without distraction.
Planning your visit
Set aside at least two to three hours for the Romantic Trail. The path is less travelled than the Panorama Trail but it includes steeper sections, wooden bridges and uneven ground. Wear sturdy shoes with good grip and consider using hiking poles, especially if descending toward Alpiglen. Check the weather forecast; rain makes the gorge slippery. Carry water and snacks as there are limited facilities until Alpiglen. If you plan to buy cheese at one of the farms, bring cash. Keep an eye on the time so you don’t miss the last train from Alpiglen back to Wengen. If you’re walking uphill from Alpiglen, allow extra time and bring an extra layer of clothing for cooler temperatures at higher altitude.
Why this trail belongs on your Wengen itinerary
While the Panorama Trail showcases the grandeur of the Alps, the Romantic Trail offers an intimate experience of the mountain landscape. Its narrow track winds through flower meadows that burst into bloom in early summer and turn golden in autumn. The Devil’s Gorge adds a dash of drama: water cascades through the narrow ravine, creating a natural soundtrack as you cross wooden bridges and peer into rock pools. Farmers still use the high pastures along this route, and you may see them making cheese in rustic huts or moving cows along the trail. Because fewer walkers choose this path, you’ll often have the scenery to yourself, with only the rustling of grasses and the distant clank of cowbells for company. The Romantic Trail is a celebration of the quieter side of the Alps – an antidote to crowded viewpoints and a chance to connect with nature at a slower pace.
Practical tips
- Pace yourself – Sections of the trail are steep and can be slippery when wet. Take your time and use hiking poles for stability.
- Flora and fauna – Bring a wildflower guide or app to identify the plants you encounter. Early morning and late afternoon are good times for spotting marmots and birds of prey.
- Respect private property – The trail passes through working farms. Close gates behind you, do not disturb livestock and avoid stepping into fenced meadows. If you buy cheese or yoghurt from a farm stand, have Swiss francs in small denominations.
- Combine with a picnic – Pack a blanket and pick up fresh bread and cheese in Wengen or Alpiglen before you start. Many small clearings offer idyllic picnic spots with mountain views.
