Grindelwald-Märt: Autumn Traditions Along the Dorfstrasse

Every first Monday in October, Grindelwald's main street closes to traffic and fills with stalls, cheese boards and the smell of grilling sausages. The 2026 edition of Grindelwald-Märt falls on Monday 5 October, and from morning through to evening the Dorfstrasse becomes a working market that locals plan their week around.

What's on the stalls

Around 80 traders set up along the village street. Regional alpine cheese is the centrepiece, including Eiger Mutschli, Alpenkräuter and Bergkäse, sold straight from the wheel. Beside the dairy stalls you will find dried meats, fresh bread, autumn honey, handmade wooden toys, leather goods and the usual mix of bric-a-brac and antiques that gives a Swiss village market its character.

Food, drink and the children's carousel

Bar stalls dot the route with mulled wine and beer, and food trucks serve raclette, bratwurst and Magenbrot. A small children's carousel runs near the church, and street musicians keep the soundtrack going. Plan to spend two to three hours if you want to browse properly, or treat it as a long lunch stop on the way to the mountains.

Practical details

  • Date: Monday 5 October 2026, morning to early evening
  • Location: Dorfstrasse, Grindelwald village centre
  • Entry: free, vendor purchases by cash or card depending on the stall
  • Distance from Wengen: about one hour by train each way

Getting there from Victoria Lauberhorn

From the hotel it is a five-minute walk to Wengen station. Take the Wengernalp Railway down to Lauterbrunnen, then change to the Bernese Oberland Railway for Zweilütschinen and on to Grindelwald. From Grindelwald station, the Dorfstrasse is a short walk uphill. With a Berner Oberland Pass or Jungfrau Travel Pass the journey is covered, otherwise budget around CHF 35 return.

Early October is one of the calmer weeks in Wengen, with the larches turning gold and the high trails still open. Come and stay with us at Victoria Lauberhorn, a Faern collection resort, and slot the Märt into a quiet autumn weekend in the Jungfrau Region.

Book your stay at Victoria Lauberhorn for Grindelwald-Märt weekend.
