Things to do in Wengen in summer

In summer, car-free Wengen turns into a walking base with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau for a backdrop and a railway that reaches from the valley floor to the high Alps. Here is what there is to do from June to September.

Hiking

The walking is the heart of a Wengen summer. The Männlichen panorama trail runs from the top of the cable car along the ridge to Kleine Scheidegg, an easy high path with the three peaks in front of you the whole way. From Männlichen the short Royal Walk climbs to a viewpoint over the valley, and down at village level the terrace and valley trails give gentler options for shorter days. Trails are well signed and well linked to the railway, so you can walk one way and ride back.

Mountain railways and viewpoints

The Wengernalpbahn climbs from the village to Wengernalp and Kleine Scheidegg, and from there the train continues up to the Jungfraujoch, the "Top of Europe", where there is snow and ice to walk on in the middle of summer. These are excursions in their own right, good for a day when you would rather ride than hike, and the views from the line are worth the trip on their own.

Lauterbrunnen valley and waterfalls

Down on the valley floor, about fifteen to twenty minutes by train, Lauterbrunnen is famous for its waterfalls. The Staubbach falls drop straight off the cliff above the village, and the Trümmelbach falls run inside the mountain, glacial water cutting through the rock. It is an easy half-day from Wengen and a complete change of scene from the high terrace above.

Family and village activities

The car-free village is easy on families, with short walks, a playground and open space free of traffic, and the mountain trips scale down well for younger legs thanks to the railway. Evenings are quiet and walkable, and everything in the village is a few minutes on foot.
