Velogemel World Championship 2027

Every February, Grindelwald hosts one of the most distinctive events in the Swiss winter, the Velogemel World Championship, raced on a wooden bike-sled invented in the village. The next edition is on Sunday 7 February 2027, an easy trip from Hotel Victoria Lauberhorn, a Faern Collection Hotel, in Wengen.

The event

The velogemel is a traditional Grindelwald invention, a wooden frame on two runners instead of wheels. Since 1996, the world championship has sent men, women and juniors down a timed course on the Bussalp slopes above Grindelwald. Racers range from serious contenders to costumed locals, and the mix of skill, humour and tradition makes for a light-hearted, photogenic day.

Where to watch from Hotel Victoria Lauberhorn

From the hotel, walk five minutes to Wengen station, take the Wengernalp Railway to Lauterbrunnen and the Bernese Oberland Railway via Zweilütschinen to Grindelwald, then the Bussalp bus to the race area, around an hour and twenty minutes each way.
