Bull Trophy Curling Championship – International Competition on Ice

Every February, Grindelwald hosts one of the quirkiest winter sports events in Switzerland — the Velogemel World Championship. Competitors race down snowy slopes on a unique wooden bike-sled hybrid invented right here in the village.
Event Overview
Date: 8 February 2026
The velogemel, a traditional Grindelwald invention, features a wooden frame with two runners instead of wheels. Since 1996, the world championship has challenged men, women, and juniors to steer these unusual snow bikes down a timed course on the Bussalp slopes above Grindelwald.
What to Expect
Dozens of racers, from serious contenders to costumed locals, line up to test their balance and speed on the downhill track. Spectators gather along the course and at the finish to cheer on the participants. The mix of skill, humour, and tradition makes for a light-hearted and photogenic event.
Insider Tips for Visitors
- Wear warm clothing and sturdy boots for standing in the snow
- Bring a camera — the sight of velogemels in action is rare outside Grindelwald
- Arrive early to find a good viewing spot and enjoy the pre-race atmosphere
- If you’re curious, you can rent a velogemel in Grindelwald and try it yourself outside race day
Combine with Other Activities in the Jungfrau Region
Combine your visit with sledging or skiing on Bussalp, or spend the morning exploring Grindelwald’s shops before heading up to watch the race.
