Family Reunions

A family reunion is the rarest of gatherings. Three or four generations, scattered across cities and countries, in one place at the same time. The point is reconnection, but the practical demand is harder than it sounds: a six-year-old and a ninety-year-old need very different days, and both should feel as if the weekend was designed for them. Altein, between two alpine lakes at 1,800 metres in Arosa, is built for exactly that kind of complexity. 126 rooms across configurations that fit couples, families, and solo travellers; a large spa that gives older guests a relaxed centre of gravity; and easy outdoor activity for everyone in between.
Spaces for the celebration
A reunion weekend usually opens informally at Zus Brasserie, where a long table works as well for forty people as for twelve and the menu lets parents order around children's appetites without having to apologise for it. The Alchemilla Parlour Bar becomes the late-evening gathering point for older cousins, aunts, and uncles after the children have gone up. Alpensand, our rooftop restaurant, suits the more formal Saturday-night dinner where the whole family is in the room together, with toasts, photographs, and a cake brought out at the right moment. Between meals, families spread out: some to the 950 m² spa, some to the trails, some to the playgrounds and lake walks just outside the property. Full details on the restaurants at Altein.
A weekend that holds every generation
Reunions at Altein are planned in layers, so that no single age group sets the pace of the day. Mornings might be slow over breakfast at Zus, then split: a guided family hike for the middle generation, a culinary workshop with the kitchen for the food-keen, a children's afternoon for the youngest, and a long spa session for grandparents who have done enough hiking for one lifetime. A daytime activity in the village gives the weekend a shared anchor. Browse the full list of Arosa activities, from 3D archery in the forest to gentle alpine walks and culinary hiking.
Why Arosa for a family reunion
Arosa is what makes the rest possible. The link to Lenzerheide gives 900 km of summer trails and 225 km of winter slopes, enough that a teenager can ski hard for a morning while a grandparent walks lakeside for an hour and a half. The village itself is small and walkable, and reachable from Zurich by train in under three hours, which matters when the guest list spans children flying in from London, grandparents arriving from Geneva, and cousins driving up from Italy. The altitude does the rest: at 1,800 metres, days feel longer, evenings feel calmer, and the family naturally gathers more often than they would at sea level.
Planning your stay
We work with you on the reunion as a logistics question with a warm core. Room blocks for the family list, arrival co-ordination, menus that hold every age and every dietary need, and an optional programme of activities families can opt into without feeling locked in.
Send us your family's preferred weekend, the rough number of generations and rooms, and a few notes about what the reunion should feel like. We will respond with a proposal that holds the whole family in one place.
Frequently asked questions
How many rooms can the property hold for a family reunion?
Altein has 126 rooms across a range of configurations: couples' rooms, family rooms, and suites for the older generation or the centrepiece of the reunion. Full-property bookings are possible for larger gatherings.
Are children welcome at meals and around the property?
Yes. Zus Brasserie is built for cross-generational dining, and the kitchen adapts to children's appetites and dietary needs without separate children's menus feeling like an afterthought.
Is the spa open to all guests during the stay?
Yes. The 950 m² spa with indoor and outdoor pools, sauna, steam, and a quiet area is open to event guests throughout the reunion weekend.
Are there activities for children in Arosa?
Plenty. Arosa runs the Bärenbande children's programme through the village, with supervised activities for younger guests across the day. The Arosa Bärenland bear sanctuary, home to rescued brown bears, is one of the most popular family outings. Add the lake walks, playgrounds, the rope park, gentle archery, and the children's ski school in winter, and the weekend has more than enough to keep the youngest guests occupied while older generations move at their own pace.
How do guests get to Arosa from Zurich or other cities?
By train from Zurich Airport in under three hours via Chur, or by road. The village is small and walkable, and Altein is 550 metres from Arosa station.
Can we add a programme of family activities to the weekend?
Yes. Guided family hikes, kitchen workshops, children's afternoons, and a flexible spa programme can all be built into the weekend without being mandatory for every guest.
