Golfing

Golfing in Arosa means playingat altitude. The Golf Club Arosa sits at around 1,800 metres above sea level onAlp Maran, making it one of the highest 18-hole courses in Europe. The 18-holelayout (par 65, 4,398 metres from the back tees) winds through alpine meadows, larch forests and natural streams, with close to 100 metres of elevation changebetween the lowest and highest holes. The season typically runs from late Maythrough October, with the longest daylight hours in midsummer allowing forsunset rounds from 4 p.m. Whether you hold a valid handicap and want a sportingchallenge or you are picking up a club for the first time, the course and itsgolf school welcome players at every level.
The Course
The Golf Club Arosa wasoriginally founded in 1942, with the first nine holes inaugurated in 1946 anddesigned by Donald Harradine. His son Peter Harradine later expanded the courseto 18 holes in 2001, and a renovation of the second nine between 2018 and 2020brought the layout to its current standard. The front nine offers widerfairways where a driver comes into play, though a long iron or fairway woodoften suffices given the altitude. Hole 5 is a particular highlight: a shortpar 3 that plays from the highest tee in Graubunden at over 1,900 metres, steeply downhill to a water-protected green. It is not about length here butabout control.
The back nine threads throughtighter, tree-lined corridors where precision matters more than power. Hole 15stands out as the longest par 3 on the course at 228 metres, playing downhilltoward the flag with little room for error on the sloping hillside beyond thegreen. The closing hole, a dogleg-left par 4 with sloping terrain, rewardstactical play and a well-judged approach. Greens throughout the course arenotably compact, and with only a single greenside bunker on the entire layout, the alpine terrain itself provides the primary defence. At altitude, the balltravels noticeably further, so club selection requires adjustment for playersaccustomed to valley courses.
