Sports facilities at Altein
Courts, a course and nine ways to move
Hotel Altein keeps its sport on its own grounds. The padel and tennis courts, the beach volleyball court and eighteen holes of mini golf sit within a few steps of the terrace, the bike room and the games room are open all year, and in winter the ski room and the sledging runs take over. Nothing here needs a car, a membership or a plan made the night before.
Courts are booked at reception, and the rackets, clubs, bats and balls are there too.
Padel
The only padel court in Arosa sits on the hotel grounds with the peaks on three sides. It is the easiest racket sport to pick up, so a first game and a serious one look much the same from the outside. Rackets and balls come from reception, the changing rooms are one floor down in the wellness area, and the court is booked by the hour.
Tennis
The tennis court sits directly beside the padel court, open to the valley and quiet enough in the morning to finish a set before breakfast. It is a hotel court rather than a club court, which means no membership, no waiting list and no dress code beyond sensible shoes. Book it at reception.
Beach volleyball
The beach volleyball court is just 200 metres from the hotel, down at the lake, and it is the right place to be on a hot summer day. Teams form at the net rather than in advance, which is how most games here start. Ask at reception for a ball and walk down.
Bike room
The bike room is part of the hotel: an indoor room where bikes are stored overnight, dry and out of the way, and where e-bikes charge while you are at dinner. It is the same room that serves as the ski and boot room in winter, so the racks change with the season. Outdoor bike parking is possible too, for anyone who wants the bike close to hand.
Boccia
Boccia asks nothing of you except that you stand up. It fills the gap between the afternoon and dinner, played on the flat ground by the garden, and it is the one game here that a nine-year-old and a grandparent can win on equal terms.
Mini golf
Eighteen holes laid out through the garden, past the rock beds and under the pines, with the mountains behind most of them. It is the only mini golf course in Arosa and a great one for families with young children: short holes, no booking, and clubs, balls and scorecards at reception. Play it in the hour before dinner, or work through the whole course after it while the light is still on the peaks.
Table tennis
Two tables: one outdoors for long summer evenings, and one indoors in the games room between the pool table and the arcade machines, which is where the whole hotel ends up on a wet afternoon. Bats and balls are at reception.
Sledge rental
Sledges can be rented directly at the hotel, so there is no detour through the village before the first run. Ask at reception and one is ready for you, along with a word on which run suits the group and when the last lift back goes.
Ski and boot room
A modern ski and boot room with heated boot holders, so the skis, boards and poles stay downstairs and the boots are warm and dry by morning. The day starts with a walk straight out towards the slope, not with a wet boot. In summer the same room becomes the bike room.
